You can secure a single PDF file or components of a PDF Portfolio with password-based security through either the Password Security dialog box or a custom security scheme. Note that you are allowed to use only the Password Security dialog to encrypt an entire PDF Portfolio.

  1. Do one of the following to secure a PDF or PDF Portfolio with password security:

    • To encrypt a single PDF, open the PDF and do one of the following;

      • Choose Security > Encryption > Interactive Password (both) to open the Password Security dialog box. Or, choose Document Properties/ Preferences shortcut >Document Properties… > Security. Select Password Security from the Security Method drop-down menu. If the PDF file is already secured, click Settings… to open the Password Security dialog box.

      • You can also apply an existing security scheme (or create a new one) to the document. See Security Scheme.

    • To encrypt a component PDF in a PDF Portfolio, open a PDF Portfolio, double-click on the component file and do one of the following:

      • Choose Security > Encryption > Interactive Password to open the Password Security dialog box. Or, choose Document Properties/ Preferences shortcut >Document Properties… > Security. Select Password Security from the Security Method drop-down menu. If the PDF file is already secured, click Settings… to open the Password Security dialog box.

      • You can also apply an existing security scheme (or create a new one) to the document. See Security Scheme.

    • To encrypt an entire PDF Portfolio, open a PDF Portfolio and do the following:

      • Choose File  > Document Properties…. In the Document Properties dialog box, on the Security tab, Select Password Security from the Security Method drop-down menu. If the PDF file is already secured, click Settings… to open the Password Security dialog box.

  1. In the Password Security dialog box, do any of the following and then click OK:

    • To limit the access to authorized users who have the open password, define the compatibility and the document components to encrypt, select Allow document opening only by password, and then enter a password in the Document Open Password

    • To restrict permissions for a file, define the compatibility, select Set a permissions password to restrict editing of security settings and enter a password in the Permissions Password Then you can specify restrictions for printing, changes, copying of text, images, and text access for screen readers.

  1. In the Password dialog box, retype the same password and then click OK.
