Measuring 3D objects in PDFs
The 3D Measurement dialog box lets you select a tool to measure 3D models, adjust the markup appearance, or change the 3D measuring preferences to determine how 3D data is measured.
Measure a 3D object
You can use the 3D Measurement tool to create measurements between points and edges of the 3D object. The 3D Measurement tool provides four types of measurements: measure the distance between two straight edges or two points of the 3D object, the radius of circular edges, and the angle between two edges. You can then specify the measuring color and decide whether to display markup text.
-
Open a PDF that contains a 3D object.
-
Using the Hand tool, click on the 3D object to enable it. The 3D Toolbar appears when you move the cursor over the 3D object.
-
On the toolbar, click the 3D Measurement Tool icon to open the 3D Measurement dialog box.
-
Under the View tab, select the type of measurement you want to use from the Type drop-down menu:
-
Ruler: It measures the distance between two points.
-
Distance: It measures the distances between two edges.
-
Radius: It measures the radius of the circular edges
-
Angle: It measures the angle between two straight edges or three points.
-
Auto: It automatically makes a recommended measurement based on your mouse-click.
-
On the Markup tab, specify the measuring color and the markup text to appear with the measurements.
-
Start measuring the 3D model:
-
-
To measure the distances between two positions on the 3D model, click on the 3D object to set a start point. Then move the pointer to another location or an edge to set an end point. Finally, click to define where to place the measurement markup.
-
To measure the angle between two points or edges, select an edge or a point to begin on the 3D object. Then move to another location to select the second edge and select a markup position to finish the measurement.
-
To discontinue a measurement, right-click on the object and select Cancel Measurement.
-
To delete a measurement markup, click it with the 3D measurement tool and press Delete on your keyboard.

3D Measurement Display
Add measurement markups
You can decide the color of the measuring line and the text that appears with the measurements. Click the Markup tab in the 3D Measurement dialog box.
-
Measuring color. Specify the color of the line and text that appear when you click or drag to measure an object. Click on the color square and select a predefined color or define a custom color.
-
Markup text. Check Use markup text first and then enter the text that appears with the measurement while you are measuring.
-
Markup records. It displays the list of measurements you have taken on the 3D model.
3D Measurement Unit and Snap settings
You can choose to display measurements based on the model scale and units, or define custom values. You can also select Snap to 3D and decide if it snaps to Points, Edges, Arcs, or Silhouette edges with adjustable color and sensitivity. Click the Tool Settings tab in the 3D Measurement dialog box.
-
Unit Settings
-
Snap Settings
-
Snap to 3D. Select it to make the Snap Setting options available. Check the snap to boxes as needed, including Points, Edge, Arcs, and Silhouette edges. Then specify the snap color.
-
Snap color. Specify the color of the snap line that appears when you hold the pointer over the 3D object.
-
Sensitivity. Define how close the pointer must be to the item in order to activate snapping.
